230 FIFTH
230 5th Avenue
20th Floor / Penthouse
(bet. 26th & 27th Sts)
New York, NY 10001

The staid marble lobby of the office building that was formerly the Victoria Hotel does little to prepare one for the scene on the 20th floor: If the 8,000-square foot room pimped out in walls of partitioned glass, dark op-art pile carpet, and purple fluorescent lights recalls Studio 54, it's because the owner, art collector Steven Greenberg, has spared no expense in making it as lavish as circa 1940’s. The Sue et Mare couch came from Karl Lagerfeld's collection, and a maze of other low-to-the-ground loungers such as a kiss-shaped velour loveseat are similarly flamboyant. The skyline twinkles beyond floor-to-ceiling windows framed by white curtains, but the scene is even more impressive on the massive roof deck where an endless array of wood benches and sturdy garden chairs invite no less than 500 quitting-timers and night owls to take in unobstructed views of the Empire State Building to the north, the Met Life building to the east, and Jersey to the west. When the breezy palm trees rustle and the old-fashioned cocktails kick in, you can easily imagine Don Johnson landing his helicopter near the stuffed zebra and cruising for foxy investment bankers.

Most people impulsively race for the windows at this retro-licious duplex lounge atop the Dream Hotel. A view to the south overlooks the "Late Show" studios and across the way, high-rise terraces swaying with singles who party this way every night. A stylin' DJ-spun scene that could easily become pretentious--with a roped-off sidewalk and "Reserved" signs on tables--is actually warm and inviting, with low striped banquettes and modern wood paneling. Giggling tourists bring an out-of-town sweetness, while tough guys in suits will help you score a seat.

Once inside BED, the attractive staff guides equally attractive patrons to one of three sections: the tiered beds, the dramatic bar or the curved dining area, separated by a glass video projection screen. The dark wood floors, white fabric-covered ceilings and warm tones create a classy vibe, but don't be distracted: A night at BED is all about the hookup!!! The second floor rooftop terrace features individual manicured gardens with gates leading to private dining areas. The rooftop also features a glass-enclosed gazebo and enclosed atrium dining room and bar for year-round use. Guests are requested to take off their shoes and slip on specially designed slippers to join their friends on the unique bed platforms that line the interior. For the less adventurous, there are the more traditional tables and chairs.
