Director: Mary Harron & John C. Walsh
Holding Fast is a visual poem about a Tibetan refugee camp in Darjeeling, India. In early 2007 composer Randall Woolf approached John C. Walsh and Mary Harron about doing a short film together. Walsh and Harron suggested as a subject this Tibetan Refugee Camp which they had visited and found captivating. The filmmakers spent about a week filming in the camp. The income of the Tibetan people there comes mostly from the carpets they make, which take two women over three weeks to weave by hand. These are then sold to tourists along with other crafts. The filmmakers were extended unlimited access including an invitation to film a private community prayer session. The music is composed of natural sounds from the videotapes, which are manipulated and combined with other electronics created by Woolf. To this, he added another an acoustic violin. Woolf then handed the completed music track over to the filmmakers. And the filmmakers edited their footage to this music. The result is Holding Fast.
